POSITION SUMMARY

The Section Chief reports Laboratory Director or Assistant Director. This position is responsible for overseeing personnel and the performance of testing within their departments. Responsibilities of this position include working closely and communicating effectively with all hospital departments and external clients referring their lab work to this facility. The management of analyzers, testing and personnel is required. This position is responsible for the formulation/update of policies and procedures and documentation as appropriate for regulatory standards. The Section Chief is responsible for assisting with testing in their department, phlebotomy, clerical and specimen processing as needed. The Section Chief must be able to troubleshoot situations quickly with a resolution and provide direction to the staff as needed. The Section Chief must be proactive to identify problems with a resolution. The Section Chief must be self-directed and able to function with minimal supervision. The Section Chief must have good organizational/scheduling skills to accomplish routine required tasks along with the unexpected tasks on a day to day basis. On duty hours can consist of sitting and standing with 60% of the time sitting. Manual dexterity and visual/auditory acuity is required for job performance. Verbal and auditory acuity to both communicate/interpret and receive test information from analyzers or via telephone is also required. Occasional lifting and/or pushing of up to 40 lb. is required. This position has exposure to body fluids and communicable disease.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED ASCP

DESCRIBE THE SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL AND SKILL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION

Advanced communication, analytical and testing skills, as generally associated with successful completion of bachelors degree program and national registry as a medical technologist (ASCP), are required. In addition, the ability to supervise other technologist, as usually associated with a minimum of five years clinical experience, is required.
