  POSITION SUMMARY (include other positions that report to this position)

The scrub person under the direct supervision of the Registered

Nurse is responsible for maintaining the integrity, safety and efficiency of the sterile field throughout the surgical procedure.  Knowledge of and experience with sterile technique qualify the scrub to prepare and arrange instruments and supplies and to facilitate the surgical procedure.  He or she must anticipate, plan for, and respond to the needs of the surgeon and other team members by constantly monitoring the sterile field.  Manual dexterity and physical stamina are required.  Other important assets include a stable temperament, ability to work under pressure, a keen sense of responsibility, and a concern for accuracy in performing all duties.  This position has exposure to body fluids, radiation and communicable disease.  Majority of time is spent standing and / or walking short distances (60% of work time) with frequent lifting, carrying, and pushing/pulling of up to 100 lb.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Current Certification as a Scrub Technologist within 90 days of hire or the equivalent in experience or Licensure as a Practical Nurse in the State of Arkansas. CPR

DESCRIBE THE SPECIFIC  EDUCATIONAL AND SKILL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION  .Basic competency is expected to be attained within 4-8 months as evidenced by 85% achievement in all areas: Competency to maintain an orderly surgical field, preventing contamination of the field by the strict practice of aseptic technique; protects self, team members and environment by following universal precautions; participates in sponge, sharps, instrument counts as prescribed by departmental policy/procedure; is constantly alert to the safety of the patient;  is knowledgeable about surgical procedures and has the ability to anticipate surgeon's needs and to serve as surgical assistant as required.  This position requires the CST to receive and transfer  medications and other prescriptive items on the sterile field  (from a licensed nurse to a surgeon) under direct supervision by the surgeon and / or circulating RN.
